Up to 50 people who lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic are joining the City of Casey's cleaning effort to help prevent the virus spreading through contact transmission.
Under the Victorian Government's Working for Victoria initiative, Citywide's Cleansing and Sanitisation Services is recruiting, training and supervising the participants working in Casey.
Funded entirely by the State Government, the new workforce will be mobilised to deliver disinfecting services on top of Council's standard cleaning regime, additional to existing Council employees, at no cost to Council.
Popular areas and communal touch points such as public seating, bike hoops, playground equipment, bins, pedestrian signal buttons, handrails, street furniture and bus shelters will get extra cleansing and disinfecting over the coming weeks.
You may see the new cleaning groups out and about in Casey, specifically around:
- The Autumn Place shopping precinct in Doveton
- The Hampton Park library and youth centre
- Wilson Botanic Park Berwick which will re-open to the public from Thursday 21 May
- Casey Fields
- The Blind Bight boat ramp and car park
- Bunjill Place precinct
- Webb Street shopping precinct between Princess Highway and Austin Avenue
- Hallam Recreation Reserve
- Guns Road Reserve
- Cairns Road Reserve
- Banjo Paterson Reserve
- Berwick Springs Wetland Reserve
City of Casey Chair Administrator Noelene Duff PSM said the Working for Victoria program delivered by Citywide is a great way of assisting jobseekers and communities during this challenging time.
"The pandemic has caused tremendous disruption to jobs across many industries, so we are very pleased to support a program which gets people back in the workforce while helping us to keep our City clean and safe," said Ms Duff.
"This extra cleaning is also helping set our community up for success as restrictions ease."
The Berwick Senior Citizens Centre, the Cranbourne Traffic School, Essex Park Community Place in Endeavour Hills and Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park are being used as staging areas for Citywide's sanitisation crews.
