Covid: Infringements issued in Katherine

Northern Territory Police are disappointed to have issued six infringements in the Katherine area for breaches of the Chief Health Officer's Directions.

These breaches were largely for people who were away from their residences without a valid reason, visiting other people and failing to wear masks.

Superintendent Peter Dash said, "Disappointingly, in three cases, four people had become intoxicated and caused disturbances at other people's homes.

"In another case, Police picked up a man who was just driving around aimlessly 'to look at the scenery'. The sixth infringement was issued to someone who left his residence to visit relatives - he was located sitting in the CBD area without a mask.

"Under the Chief Health Officer's Directions, there are only five reasons to be away from your home during a lockdown. Visiting family - unless it is to provide care - is not one of them. Neither is sightseeing, nor is loitering.

"We understand that being stuck at home isn't ideal, but we have to control this outbreak and limiting social movement and wearing masks are key to achieving that.

"So far, Police have taken an educational approach to compliance, and for the most part the residents of the region have been fantastic. However, there are some elements of the community who continue to behave in a disgraceful manner and with no regard to their personal safety nor that of their family and fellow community members."

Each of the individuals was issued a $5024 infringement for contravening an emergency declaration.

Katherine and Robinson River remain in lockdown until 6pm on Monday and there is a mask mandate in place across the Northern Territory.
