The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Cumberland City Council to name three reserves in the suburb of Pemulwuy.
Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said feedback was being sought on the proposal to name Bidjiwong Reserve, Jarra Park and Kunnama Park.
"Through place naming, communities have the opportunity to unlock past stories, preserve traditions, reawaken language and provide a sense of belonging and identity," Mrs Underwood said.
"We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed names."
Bidjiwong Reserve is located in a new subdivision adjacent to Driftway Drive. Bidjiwong is a Dharug word and means lizard or water dragon. Water dragons inhabit the nearby Prospect Creek and their future upstream migration into the retention basin is anticipated.
Jarra Park is located in a new subdivision adjacent to Driftway Drive, between Murragauan and Cherribit Streets. Jarra is a Dharug word and means 'thin' or 'lean'. The reserve is both linear and thin.
Kunnama Park is located in a new subdivision on the corner of Murragauan Street and Driftway Drive. Kunnama is a Dharug word and means 'cook'. The small 'pocket-park' will include barbecue facilities.

The closing date for submissions is 20 January 2023.
