The Territory Controller has stood up the Territory Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the preparation for and response to this event.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a cyclone watch for Cape Don to Milingimbi, including Tiwi Islands, Minjilang, Warruwi, Maningrida, Gunbalanya, Milikapiti, Pirlangimpi and Wurrumiyanga.
People living in these areas should be getting ready now. In coming days, the cyclone may intensify and track towards Darwin.
"Now is the time to be preparing, but not panicking," said Superintendent Kirsten Engels.
"Make sure your house is ready, know where you will shelter if you need to and it's really important to make sure you have an emergency kit with enough food and water for everyone in your house for three days.
"Severe weather can happen any time and we need to be ready for that.
"Check on your neighbours, particularly any elderly or vulnerable people who may not be aware of the developing situation."
