Ararat Rural City Council is encouraging residents to register for a new Detox Your Household program, helping local households safely dispose of unwanted chemicals and problem wastes.
- Saturday 13 June 2026
- 1.30pm to 3.30pm
- Ararat Transfer Station
- Surface Hill Road, Ararat
The program will give residents a convenient way to clear out cupboards, sheds, and garages of items that cannot go in regular kerbside bins, including bleach, pesticides, weed killers and cleaning products.
Residents must register in advance to take part, with no option to attend without a booking.
Chief Executive Officer, Dr Tim Harrison, said the program is a practical step that will help residents tidy up at home while protecting the local environment. "When you look in the back of a shed or under the laundry sink, most of us can find items like chemical cleaners, hand sanitisers, fire extinguishers, gas canisters and the like, that we're not able to just throw in the red bins and send on their way," Dr Harrison said. "This program gives people a simple, organised way to deal with those problem items, and it keeps them out of landfill and away from our waterways."
"Our community has shown again and again that it is prepared to get behind straightforward, local solutions that make a measurable difference," Dr Harrison said. "By registering and turning up with a car boot full of old chemicals, paints, and other tricky waste, residents can do something that is good for their household, and good for our region."
Council has already received 8 bookings and can accommodate up to 60 households through the program, which means there is still plenty of opportunity for residents to secure a place. Residents who wish to participate are urged to register now rather than wait until the last minute, as bookings are essential.
Detailed information about the types of items that can be accepted, how to prepare waste for drop off, and what residents can expect on the day is available on Council's events section of the website. https://www.ararat.vic.gov.au/events/detox-your-household
