Devlyn Australia Named Builder for Perth Aboriginal Stay

  • Devlyn Australia Pty Ltd appointed as the builder for the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation project
  • $23 million construction will accommodate Aboriginal people from across Western Australia who travel to Perth
  • Facility will be purpose-built to provide safe, culturally appropriate, and affordable short-term accommodation and support the reduction of rough sleeping and overcrowded housing
  • Construction will commence in late 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2027

Perth's Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation project has reached a major milestone, with the awarding of the $23.2 million construction contract to Devlyn Australia Pty Ltd (Devlyn).

Devlyn has extensive experience delivering large projects around Western Australia, including new theatres at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Scarborough Primary School teaching blocks and the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct.

The Perth Aboriginal Short Stay, located in Cannington, will be Western Australia's fifth bespoke build, providing a safe, culturally appropriate, and affordable accommodation solution for Aboriginal people.

There are currently three other Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodations operating in Kalgoorlie, Derby, and Broome. The Geraldton Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation is currently under construction by local Geraldton builder, GBSC Yurra.

Construction will commence in late 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2027.

Upon completion, the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay will accommodate up to 100 guests and will comprise universal access, family, double and single units. These will be nestled amongst culturally considered landscaping designed to support healing, privacy, and community.

As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:

"It is great to see progress on the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay with the awarding of a $23.2 million construction contract to Devlyn.

"This significant milestone brings us one step closer to delivering on a project that will support Aboriginal people travelling to Perth, and will help to avoid people sleeping rough in the city.

"Our government is investing a record $5.8 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures, including in Aboriginal short stays in Perth and regional WA."

As stated by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch:

"I'm proud to be part of a government that is committed to improving accommodation options for our State's Aboriginal community.

"Aboriginal people living remotely often must travel to Perth to access services and for family reasons, but accommodation options can be limited.

"The Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation project will provide a safe, well-appointed and culturally appropriate place for Aboriginal people to stay while they are in Perth."

As stated by Cannington MLA Ron Sao:

"The appointment of Devlyn Australia is an important milestone in delivering a purpose-built, affordable short-stayaccommodation solution in Perth.

"When complete, this will be a managed facility for people who may be sleeping rough or staying with family when travelling for medical or cultural reasons.

"This facility will help to improve the well-being of Aboriginal people, providing a safe and culturally appropriate environment, while they attend medical appointments, training, education,and employment opportunities."
