Dianella Community Centre Wins Public Vote

A new community centre under construction in Tarneit is one step closer to being formally named following an extensive community engagement process.

Wyndham City Council formally endorsed the name Dianella Community Centre at this week's Council Meeting, which pays homage to a flora species that is indigenous to the area.

Residents were able to vote between two proposed names for the site, which were selected following an extensive engagement process undertaken by Council involving key Wyndham historians and other stakeholders.

The names were required to meet several criteria to be considered appropriate and had to reflect the centre's purpose and location, align with Council's policies, and celebrate the diversity and history of Wyndham.

Wyndham City Mayor Cr Adele Hegedich said the name Dianella Community Centre received 75% of the vote in a survey undertaken on Wyndham's community engagement website The Loop over the month of March.

"The community has spoken loud and clear - they want Tarneit's newest community centre to be named Dianella," Cr Hegedich said.

"I'd like to thank those people who took the time to place their vote."

"The name will now be submitted to Geographic Naming Victoria, which will undertake its own community engagement process before formally approving and gazetting the name, providing community feedback is positive."

Once complete the community centre, which is located in Congo Drive, Tarneit, will feature access to early education and care services, including kindergarten, maternal and child health, consulting rooms, a community gathering space, and a suite of programs to suit all ages.

The centre is expected to open its doors in mid-2021.
