Media Release Discovery Princess Docks in Darwin as CLP Government Turns the Tide on Tourism Growth
28 November 2025
Territorians are set to host some 3600 passengers and 1350 crew members as the largest cruise ship of the season docks into Darwin on Friday. The Discovery Princess, a 145-megaton vessel, is one of 111 cruise ship arrivals over the record-breaking 2024-25 period.
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Hon Marie-Clare Boothby welcomed the news, celebrating the visit as evidence that the industry is on the way up, as data shows that the Territory has become a destination of choice under the Finocchiaro CLP Government.
"While other states and Territories have seen a downturn, the Territory is bucking the national trend as the only jurisdiction to record an increase in cruise-related activity," said Ms Boothby.
"The Discovery Princess visit - the latest in a long list of cruise ship arrivals - is tangible proof that the Territory is leading the way on economic growth in the tourism sector."
"It's a huge win for local tourism operators, as passengers explore all corners of the Top End - from our jumping crocodile cruises and spectacular parks to the Military Museum and local hop-on, hop-off tours," said Ms Boothby.
The latest figures from the Australian Cruise Association confirm the total economic impact of the Territory's 24/25 cruise season was $205.6 million - a 13.3% increase and supporting 581 local jobs.
While other states saw declines, the NT's cruise sector surged ahead thanks to a strong increase in ship visits, turnaround calls and cruise line expenditure. Once again, Territorians see that the Finocchiaro CLP Government's plan to rebuild the economy is delivering real results for families and businesses.
