Double trouble for unlicenced drug driver at Whittington

Geelong Highway Patrol officers have nabbed the same driver twice in less than five hours in Whittington as part of Operation Furlong.

Officers intercepted a Holden utility filled with rubbish on Elizabeth Street just before 11pm on Friday.

The male driver initially tried to pass off as his older brother but eventually came clean and admitted he didn't hold a licence.

The 48-year-old Whittington man also returned a positive reading for methamphetamine.

He was instructed not to drive again but police later spotted the Holden on Fellmongers Road at about 2.20am this morning.

Officers attempted to intercept the car but it sped off and for safety reasons it was not pursued.

Instead, the quick-thinking officers followed their hunch that would be the same driver and waited outside his house.

A short time later, huffing and puffing, the driver returned to his house.

The jig was up and the 48-year-old once again admitted to doing the wrong thing, informing officers he had parked around the corner and was attempting to sprint home before police arrived.

The man was drug tested once more and went positive to methamphetamine and cannabis.

His car was impounded for 28 days at a cost of $1,225.

The man is expected to be charged on summons for drug driving, fail to stop on police direction, drive in a manner dangerous, speeding, stating a false name and unlicensed driving

The impound forms part of Operation Furlong which will run state-wide from 12:01am Friday 28 October to 11:15pm Tuesday 1 November.
