Dr. David Pellman Joins Prestigious EMBO Membership

Dr. David Pellman has been elected as a new Associate (foreign) Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)-a lifelong honor recognizing excellence in the life sciences. He is one of 69 scientists elected to the 2025 EMBO Membership class, which includes 60 members based in Europe and nine Associate Members from outside the region.

Election to EMBO recognizes outstanding achievements in the life sciences and offers scientists the opportunity to help shape the future of research through participation in EMBO programs and leadership roles. Members are selected through a competitive nomination and election process by the existing EMBO community of more than 2,100 scientists worldwide.

"A major strength of EMBO lies in the excellence and dedication of its members. Science thrives on global collaboration, and the annual election of the new EMBO Members and Associate Members brings fresh energy and inspiration to our community," says Fiona Watt, EMBO Director. "We are honored to welcome this remarkable group of scientists to the EMBO Membership. Their ideas and contributions will enrich the organization and help advance the life sciences internationally."

Dr. Pellman is a cancer biologist whose research explores the fundamental processes driving genome instability and mutation, key contributors to cancer development and progression. His laboratory has made significant discoveries in understanding how complex mutational processes such as chromothripsis, whole-genome duplication, and breakage-fusion cycles contribute to cancer evolution. His team also studies the role of nuclear architecture in maintaining genome integrity, as well as mechanisms of asymmetric cell division and nuclear envelope formation.

A member of Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, Dr. Pellman holds the Margaret M. Dyson Professorship in Pediatric Oncology and is a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School. He is also an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed his training in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology at Dana-Farber and Boston Children's Hospital.

EMBO is an organization of more than 2,100 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences across Europe and beyond.

Dr. Pellman and the rest of the 2025 class will be formally welcomed at the next EMBO Members' Meeting in Heidelberg, Germany, this October.
