Council, at its April 2023 Ordinary Council meeting, endorsed the DRAFT Low Pressure Sewer Policy.
With the construction of the Wamoon Sewer Scheme in full motion, the policy has been developed to provide guidance on the operation of a low pressure sewer system and outlines the responsibilities of Council and private landholders. As well as introducing controls, this new policy also offers education/guidelines to landholders.
A low pressure sewer system is a network of sealed pipes and small, below-ground pump stations at certain connected properties in very flat areas, where gravity sewer won't work. The pump stations collect household sewage and pump it to the sewer main, located in the street.
Council's Director Operations Tom Steele said the Low Pressure Sewer Policy has been designed as an overarching document to guide staff and residents in how to manage the low pressure scheme.
"With Wamoon being the first low pressure sewer system in Leeton Shire, the policy outlines what residents can expect and what they need to do to ensure correct operation of the system. To keep everything operating smoothly, it's important to know what not to put in the system. In many ways, low pressure systems are quite similar to owning a property with a traditional or aerated septic," he said.
