Earthworks to start at Melville Oval

Earthworks will start next week at Melville Oval to prepare for the construction of two new netball courts and a pavilion.

A section of Market Place road will be permanently closed to create the extra space required to build the new community assets at the northern end of the recreation precinct.

The decision to acquire a portion of the road reserve was formally adopted at the Council meeting on Wednesday night after a period of public consultation.

This program of work will be the first stage of the $8.4m Melville Oval Facilities Redevelopment Project that will also include a refurbishment of the heritage grandstand and new car parking.

Mayor Councillor David Robertson said lead contractor Ultrabuild of Hamilton had set up base at Melville Oval, which would be a construction zone for at least the next 12 months.

"The community can expect a lot of activity between now and Christmas as Ultrabuild breaks ground for the netball courts and pavilion," said Cr Robertson.

"The courts will be built according to national playing standards and the new pavilion will feature lots of modern facilities and great social spaces for user groups to enjoy."

The Melville Oval Facilities Redevelopment Project is due for completion December 2024.
