- DevelopmentWA has approved the development application for a new State primary school in East Perth
- The school will be delivered on the north-eastern portion of the former Queens Gardens car park site
- The Cook Government is investing $165 million to deliver the first government primary school within the wider Perth CBD
A new inner-city primary school at East Perth is one step closer to reality with the recent development approval of the plans by DevelopmentWA.
The Cook Government is investing $165 million to deliver the first government primary school within the wider Perth CBD.
The school has a unique, high-quality multi-storey design that is suited to an inner-city context.
The school will accommodate up to 600 students upon opening and includes:
- a four-storey teaching block comprising of learning areas and specialist classroom spaces for students in kindergarten to year 6;
- community hall and library;
- administration and staff facilities;
- playing fields and multi-sport courts; and
- landscaping works.
Site works have commenced under an initial development approval, and it is expected that the school will open for term one 2029 for kindergarten to year 6 students.
As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:
"For the first time in 50 years,Perthchildren will be able to attend a public primary school in the CBD,ensuring inner-city families have access to a high-quality local education close to home.
"We are planning ahead forPerth's growing inner-city population, investing $165 million to deliver a modern, purpose-built school that meets the needs of families now and into the future.
"This multi-storey school has been designed to give students the very best start, with state-of-the-art features including contemporary learning spaces, specialist facilities and areas that support both education and play.
"This project will create a vibrant new education hub forEastPerth, bringing together students, families and the community in a space that supports learning, connection and opportunity."
As stated by Planning and Lands Minister and Perth MLA John Carey:
"With the approval of the Development Application, the main construction works for the school can proceed.
"This represents a $165 million investment by our State Government, delivering a brand-new school for children and families in East Perth, Northbridge and Perth.
"It's one of a number of projects we're delivering - along with the WACA Ground redevelopment and new affordable housing projects in Perth - that are about enhancing amenity for inner-city residents and encouraging more people to live in the city."
