The potential impact of COVID-19 on emergencies, looking after the wellness and mental health for first responders and the upcoming bushfire season were in focus when volunteer emergency services leaders met today.
Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan joined the volunteers for the commencement of the 2020 Department of Fire and Emergency Services' Metropolitan Operations Volunteer Pre-Season Forum held in Perth.
With bushfire and cyclone seasons approaching, there were in-depth briefings from the Bureau of Meteorology, as well as presentations on aerial firefighting operations, interstate deployments and traffic management at incidents.
Leaders from Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Volunteer Fire and Emergency Services, State Emergency Service, Bush Fire Brigades and Marine Rescue attended, along with Local Government Chief Bushfire Control Officers.
As stated by Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan:
"The 26,000 emergency services volunteers across our vast State make a vital contribution to responding to incidents and this annual forum is an important part of preparing for the season ahead.
"The information and briefings they receive at this forum will be passed on to their brigades, groups and units to help them prepare for the upcoming high-threat season.
"But Western Australians must take their own personal responsibility to prepare themselves as well.
"We are coming into a wonderful time of year, but please do not be complacent. Whether it's on the water, out hiking or travelling through the bush, be prepared and determine now what you would do in an emergency or better yet how you could avoid one."
