Social housing properties across NSW are being made cheaper to run, more comfortable to live in, and better for the environment.
The Australian and NSW Governments are partnering with 22 Community Housing providers to upgrade thousands of community housing properties in NSW. This work falls under the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI).
More than 2,300 community housing properties will be upgraded by the end of 2026. This is thanks to nearly $18 million in joint funding from the Australian and NSW Governments, as well as Community Housing Providers.
These upgrades will include:
- rooftop solar panels and shared solar systems
- reverse cycle air conditioning
- energy-efficient hot water systems
- ceiling insulation, window shading and draught proofing
- LED lighting and ceiling fans.
This funding is part of the $175 million SHEPI program jointly delivered by the Australian and NSW Governments. SHEPI aims to upgrade around 24,000 social housing homes in total by mid-2027. In its first year, more than 2,000 NSW homes received upgrades.
The national SHEPI is providing $1.1 billion to support energy performance upgrades to over 100,000 social housing properties across Australia by 2028-29. This includes $800 million of Commonwealth funding.
