Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has fined Dandenong South company RENEX Op Co Pty Ltd over unauthorised construction works which did not have the necessary environmental approvals.
RENEX in Ordish Rd, Dandenong South operates an EPA licensed thermal treatment plant that accepts contaminated soil., then uses heat to treat it.
EPA Southern Metropolitan Region Manager Marleen Mathias says the RENEX site, had constructed a storage shed, a 1.4 megalitre tank and installed a filtration system without seeking the necessary EPA Works Approval.
"The Works Approval process is there to make sure that proposed works are adequately assessed and environmental risks can be addressed prior to construction and installation of new systems," Ms Mathias said.
"It gives EPA the power to apply legally enforceable conditions to the project design to protect the environment and the community."
The fine for conducting works without a Works Approval, an offence under the Environment Protection Act 1970, will cost the company $8,261.
EPA officers will continue to monitor the site and take any necessary regulatory actions consistent with EPA's compliance and enforcement policy.
Under the Environment Protection Act 1970 and the Infringements Act 2006, the company has the right to have the decision to issue the infringement notice reviewed or alternatively to have the matter heard and determined by a court.
