Erosion, Sediment Control Aid Offered for Builders

MidCoast Council

MidCoast Council is offering personalised, on-site advice to builders, developers, and landowners to get effective erosion and sediment control measures in place on building sites.

Poor site management can lead to soil, sand and other materials being washed into drains, creeks and rivers. This can damage aquatic ecosystems, block stormwater drains, and harm water quality.

With ongoing construction and development across the MidCoast region, Council wants to improve local understanding of the importance of erosion and sediment control and support improvement of site management skills.

Council's Manager of Natural Systems, Mr Gerard Tuckerman said erosion and sediment runoff from building sites is one of the leading causes of pollution in our waterways.

"It only takes one heavy rainfall event to wash tonnes of sediment into local creeks, causing long-term damage to sensitive environments," explained Mr Tuckerman.

"With free support available, now is a great opportunity to get needed advice and ensure your site practices are right – and it could help you avoid potential fines in the future."

MidCoast Council is reminding builders and site managers that erosion and sediment control is not only best practice, it is also a legal requirement under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997. Failing to comply can result in significant fines and stop-work notices.
