Exercise Right Week 2021

Running from Monday 24 May to Sunday 30 May, the campaign aims to highlight the benefits of exercise for health and well-being.

Supporting the health of CFA members is crucial to the organisation's effectiveness.

By becoming more aware of their health and making small lifestyle changes, CFA members will be in a better place to provide high-level community services.

Health Services Officer Dan Keary said it's important for all CFA members to look after their health.

"Healthy members lead to increased productivity and high service delivery, which is crucial for CFA as an emergency organisation providing frontline services to the community," Dan said.

"Additionally, it's vitally important for members to maintain sufficient physical activity levels to support their overall health, wellbeing and quality of life. Exercise Right Week is a great opportunity for us to stop and think about our health."

Physical activity and exercise can have immediate and long-term health benefits and can reduce the risk of developing several diseases including type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

A minimum of 30 minutes a day can allow these benefits to be felt. Increases in daily activity can come from small changes made throughout the day.

In Australia's Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines (2014), the activity guidelines for adults are:

  • Accumulate 150 to 300 minutes (2½ to 5 hours) of moderate intensity physical activity weekly
  • Be active on most, preferably all, days every week
  • Do muscle strengthening activities on at least 2 days each week
  • Minimise the amount of time spent in prolonged sitting
  • Break up long periods of sitting as often as possible.
