Ever wondered what happens behind the gates of a Council depot, how drinking water makes its way from the dam to your tap, or how the Tweed Regional Museum curates its exhibitions?
This Local Government Week (Monday 3 to Sunday 9 August) Tweed residents are invited to go behind the scenes and explore some of the people, places and services that keep the Tweed moving every day.
The 2026 program features tours, demonstrations and activities across the Tweed before finishing with the biggest event of the week – an Open Day for Council's new flood-resilient Murwillumbah Depot.
Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said Local Government Week offered a rare opportunity to see Council's work from a completely different perspective.
"Council delivers 53 services, but much of that work happens quietly behind the scenes.
"Local Government Week gives our community the chance to step inside, meet the people doing the work and discover what it takes to keep the Tweed running.
"The recent opening of our new Murwillumbah Depot provides an excellent opportunity for us to finish the week by inviting residents to see this exciting new facility," Cr Cherry said.
The Murwillumbah Depot Open Day will take place on Saturday 8 August from 10 am – 12 noon.
Visitors can tour the facility, see our vehicles and equipment, discover the services operating from the site and learn how the depot supports everything from road and park maintenance to printing street signs. Free coffee, sausages and plants will be available while stocks last.
The new depot was built to better protect the vehicles, equipment and materials that keep our community running, which were previously stored in flood-affected areas.
