Northwestern Ontario's thriving tourism industry is a key component of our region's economy and has helped build strong and sustainable communities throughout. Investments in tourism directly stimulate local economic and growth opportunities, while also creating accessible and engaging ways for international and domestic travellers to explore Canada.

Today the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced a FedNor investment of $1 million in support of Science North's expansion in Northwestern Ontario through the planning of two permanent tourism centres located in Thunder Bay and Kenora. Marcus Powlowski, Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay-Rainy River, was also on hand for the announcement.

This funding will support Science North's visitor experience design and program development, architectural schematic design development, and operating business plan development. With FedNor's backing, Science North will establish a permanent facility in Thunder Bay, expand the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre in Kenora, and expects to create 12 permanent full-time and 12 part-time direct jobs.
