Ferguson Not Off Hook 19 March 2024

Tas Labor

Serious questions remain unanswered about Michael Ferguson's knowledge of the actions of a police officer who committed the most heinous and unthinkable crimes against children.

In a selectively chosen media appearance yesterday, Tasmanians heard the former Police Minister speak for nearly 15 minutes without providing an apology.

Mr Ferguson and Jeremy Rockliff still need to come clean on the following:

  • Did Mr Ferguson, or his office, advise Mark Shelton to not make his planned Parliamentary condolence to Mr Reynolds? The RTI shows Mr Shelton's office asking for Mr Reynolds' career information to be incorporated into a tribute, which never occurred.
  • When did Mr Ferguson form the view that a police funeral was inappropriate?
  • Did Mr Rockliff tell then Premier Hodgman about the contents of the briefing note? Was Cabinet informed?
  • When did current Premier Jeremy Rockliff know about Mr Reynolds' history?

If Mr Ferguson can't answer these questions today, it's even clearer that he's got something to hide.
