Longer Trading Hours Are Coming For Christmas

Three weekdays locked in for midnight trading, giving last-minute shoppers extra time to tick off their Christmas lists.

This year's Christmas trading hours have been unveiled, with shops across Adelaide allowed to open until midnight on Thursday 17 December, Tuesday 22 December and Wednesday 23 December.

Stores can also stay open until midnight for the Black Friday sales, being held 27 November.

The dates were chosen after consultation between businesses, shopping centres and unions.

Last year more than $66 million was spent in the City of Adelaide across three midnight trading nights, with Friday 19 December having the highest daily spend with over $28 million splashed in one day.

Adelaide Economic Development Agency's Executive Manager, Rundle Mall, Andrew White said festive midnight trading was a much-loved Rundle Mall tradition.

"Whether shoppers are searching for something special or ticking off their Christmas list, extended trading hours provide the perfect opportunity to discover the diversity of stores across Adelaide's premier retail, dining and entertainment precinct while enjoying the festive atmosphere," Mr White said.

Shops have been able to open until midnight on Black Friday and on up to three weekdays in December since legislation came into effect on 1 November 2022.

The Shop Trading Hours (Extension of Hours) Amendment Act 2022 also enabled shops across Adelaide to open at 9am on Sundays and to permanently allow Boxing Day trading in the city and suburbs, with the exception of larger supermarkets.

Prior to the 2022 legislation, shops opened on Sundays at 11am, and only shops in the Adelaide CBD could open on Boxing Day.

Shops in regional South Australia are deregulated and can trade whenever they choose.
