For the finalists of the 34th Banksia National Sustainability Awards – Australia's longest running and most prestigious sustainability awards – the message is strong. For humanity to survive, we need biodiversity to thrive.
The finalists, drawn from a record number of entries, demonstrate optimism and hope for a brighter future despite fears of an economic downturn, says Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond.
"We can't be subject to pessimism. People need to hear our sustainability success stories. These are Australia's brightest leaders, changemakers and innovators who are making a positive impact on the world," says Ms van Egmond.
Reflecting the popularity to conserve, protect and restore Australia's ecosystems, the Biodiversity, Circular Transition and Net Zero categories received the most entries for the Banksia Awards.
"Given Australia's commitment to protect 30% of the Earth by 2030, it's fantastic to see our finalists accelerating efforts and acting with the sense of urgency required to regenerate the environment," says Ms van Egmond.
The finalists across 15 categories also celebrate people and organisations that foster inclusivity and diversity in the workplace, present unique design solutions for cities, and facilitate climate adaptation in regional Australia.
The finalists include:
- a web tool that shows farmers what birds might utilise woodland areas on their farms
- a profit-for-purpose company that aims to make the housing sector ecologically sustainable
- a business with a unique timber salvaging supply chain and recycling profitability model
- a social enterprise that provides free food relief to 27 charity partners
The winners of the 34th Banksia National Sustainability Awards will be announced at a gala event at the Melbourne Convention and Entertainment Centre on 23 March. Radio 3AW co-host Russel Howcroft of Gruen Transfer fame will be the guest speaker. Tickets to attend this event in-person
