Fire destroys border town shops at Mungindi

Police are investigating a fire that destroyed a number of businesses in a small town on the Queensland/ NSW border yesterday.

About 7.50pm (Tuesday 1 September 2020), emergency services were called to St George Street, Mungindi – about 165km north east of Lightning Ridge – after reports of a fire.

NSW Fire and Rescue attended, and with assistance from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, worked to extinguish the blaze that is believed to have started inside a butcher shop.

Three stores, including the butcher, supermarket, and clothing store, and a residential flat within the building, were completely destroyed by the fire.

The fire is estimated to have caused $1 million worth of damage, including loss of stock.

Officers attached to New England Police District have established a crime scene and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
