Firearm located during vehicle stop; man charged at Fairfield

Police have charged a man after he was allegedly found to be in possession of a firearm in Fairfield yesterday.

About 8pm (Monday 14 September 2020), officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command stopped a vehicle on Hamilton Road after concerns the driver may be in breach of current bail conditions.

Officers approached the vehicle and the driver, a man aged 37, signalled that he was unable to open his window.

Officers opened the driver's door and allegedly saw a homemade firearm sitting on his lap. He was arrested and removed from the car. A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered a small amount of heroin.

He submitted to a roadside drug test that allegedly returned a positive result for methamphetamine.

He was taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with possess unregistered firearm, and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and will appear in Fairfield Local Court today (Tuesday 15 September 2020).
