The decision to fire the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is irresponsible and flies in the face of evidence-based public health.
This 17-member federal advisory committee provides recommendations and guidance to the CDC on adult and childhood immunization schedules and required coverage. The committee plays a critical role in protecting public health-particularly the health of children-and the removal of trusted, highly qualified vaccine experts undermines public confidence and safety.
ASM urges the Department of Health and Human Services to reinstate the ACIP and to ensure that all future committee appointments include experts with diverse scientific expertise in public health, virology, immunology and epidemiology.
Stripping this body of proven scientific voices is a grave misstep that risks long-term harm to public trust and safety.
