On August 5, 2019, Secretary Pompeo announced negotiations with the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau on agreements to amend the Compacts of Free Association between those states and the United States. The United States held initial consultations with the governments of the three nations on May 27 and 28, 2020 to organize the talks.
The U.S. interagency negotiating team is led by Ambassador Karen B. Stewart and Department of the Interior's Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Douglas W. Domenech.
Our Compacts of Free Association with the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau have contributed to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
