September is International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and Wagga Wagga City Council is getting involved in the Turning Australia Blue national campaign.
The trees in the centre of Fitzmaurice Street will light up blue for the month of September in a bid to improve local awareness and connect men with much needed support provided by the Wagga Wagga Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Mike Murray, leader of the Wagga Wagga Prostate Cancer Support Group, urges men and families to reach out.
"Prostate Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in our local region and many men and their families struggle to cope with the diagnosis," Mr Murray said.
"Early detection is the key to survival. Currently only 36 per cent of men are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in Stage 1 when the disease is easiest to treat.
"Our hope is to raise greater awareness of early detection and to connect with men in our community who may need support."
The Wagga Wagga Prostate Cancer Support Group provides men and their partners with information about prostate cancer and with the type of support that comes from others who have been through the disease.
The group meets socially at the Wagga RSL Club on the second Thursday of each month at 6pm, and partners are welcome.
