Major construction works have started on the Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre - a multi-purpose facility that is being delivered by the Victorian Government in partnership with Yarra City Council.

The foundations for the multi-level sports centre were laid earlier this year with the ground floor precast walls and steel frames currently being installed. Concrete is being poured for the level one floor with a tower crane to lift walls and frames into place as the building progresses.

The innovative sports centre is being constructed by Built Environs on the Fitzroy Gasworks site, with major construction expected to be completed in mid-2024.

Yarra City Council Mayor Cr. Claudia Nguyen shared her excitement at the progress so far.

"I look forward to this wonderful and well needed sports facility being delivered. The Fitzroy Sports Centre will provide safe, accessible and inclusive opportunities for physical activity for members of our community."

The centre will comprise a multi-purpose court, four indoor courts, a 1,000-plus square metre gymnasium, cafe and lounge area, community facilities, gender neutral change rooms, umpire change rooms, foyer and reception over four levels.

The new sports centre has been designed to integrate with the two indoor sports courts of the Wurun Senior Campus, which opened at the start of 2022, to enable shared use and create a six-court facility outside of school hours.

The vertical design of the centre is in response to the demand for sports facilities in built-up inner-city areas - providing room for a range of local sports clubs.

The Victorian Government has committed $49.5 million to the project and there is a $5 million contribution from Yarra City Council.
