The Albanese Labor Government is today announcing an additional $4.4 million to 83 Emergency Relief and Food Relief providers across Queensland and Western Australia to support Australians who have experienced recent flood events and related cost of living pressures.
Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth said this additional funding will help support service providers, individuals and families to access essential items - such as food, clothing and petrol - in areas experiencing higher service demand.
"The recent flood events in the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Kimberley have seen a surge in people accessing Emergency and Food Relief services," Minister Rishworth said.
"We are responding to this surge, and providing additional much-needed support to help Australians through these challenging times.
"This additional financial support is a lifeline for some of the most vulnerable members of flood-affected Queensland and Western Australian communities."
Today's announcement follows advice from the National Coordination Group as they continue to monitor demand for Emergency Relief and Food Relief across the country.
The National Coordination Group works with Emergency and Food Relief providers and the Department of Social Services to advise the Government on how to assist individuals in need across Australia.
"We know the occurrence of natural weather events is increasing, as are some costs of living. We will continue to seek advice from the National Coordination Group to ensure our funding levels are calibrated to the demand for these services," Minister Rishworth said.
This additional funding follows the extension of funding for Emergency Relief, Food Relief, and Commonwealth Financial Counselling programs under the Government's Financial Wellbeing and Capability Activity.
Senator Tony Sheldon, Special Envoy for Disaster Recovery welcomed the announcement.
"Emergency Relief and Food Relief providers play a pivotal role in the supply of frontline support services in the aftermath of natural disasters. This additional funding will ensure flood-affected communities in Queensland and Western Australia can continue to access the urgent support they need."
The Australian Government currently invests approximately $50 million annually to support around 450,000 Australians facing financial crisis or hardship, playing a vital role in helping impacted Australians rebuild their lives and get back on their feet.
