Community grants of up to $5,000 are now available to Pilbara based community organisations, with the latest round of Fortescue Metals Group's (Fortescue) Community Grants program now open.
The biannual program helps fund community projects, groups and initiatives that focus on creating a positive impact in communities within the Town of Port Hedland, City of Karratha and shires of Ashburton and East Pilbara.
Fortescue's General Manager Hedland Operations Mark Komene said Fortescue was founded on the belief that the communities in which the Company operates should benefit from its success.
"At Fortescue, we're proud to support community partners whose values and program objectives align with ours, as part of our long-standing commitment to create economic opportunities within the Pilbara region," Mr Komene said.
As a recent grant recipient, Pilbara Universities Centre (PUC) delivered an Introduction to Indigenous Leadership course to young Aboriginal people aged between 16 and 25 in partnership with Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre, educating participants about a range of leadership styles through a two-part webinar series.
PUC Chief Executive Officer Susan Grylls said, "Fortescue's continued dedication to supporting community organisations like ours is incredibly important, and with their help we've been able to offer free education to 20 young Aboriginal students empowering them with some of the tools they need to develop into future leaders in their communities."
During FY21, Fortescue provided 60 community grants totalling A$146,000 and a total of A$2.3 million has been awarded through the program since it commenced in 2010.
