Event brings together leading cybersecurity experts to help businesses and individuals protect against AI-powered threats
With cybercrime projected to cost the global economy more than A$20 trillion by 2028 and major Australian companies including MediSecure, Latitude Financial, Optus and Medibank falling victim to significant breaches, the University of Wollongong (UOW) is hosting a free cybersecurity masterclass for Liverpool businesses and the community.
The event, Cybercrime and Security, will help individuals and business-owners better understand and respond to the evolving threat of cybercrime - particularly as the use of artificial intelligence becomes more widespread – and is being held on Thursday 12 June at the UOW Liverpool campus.
It will bring together leading cybersecurity experts and industry professionals to explore current risks and share practical advice on how people and businesses can protect themselves online.
Distinguished Professor Willy Susilo, an internationally recognised expert in cybersecurity and cryptography and Director of UOW's Institute of Cybersecurity and Cryptology, will be one of the speakers. Professor Susilo's keynote presentation will highlight the ways cybercriminals are using emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to carry out more sophisticated attacks.

"Cybercrime is one of the fastest growing and most complex challenges today impacting critical business infrastructure and day-to-day operations," Professor Susilo said.
"From phishing scams to large-scale data breaches, we are seeing attacks become more targeted, more intelligent and more damaging. This event is an opportunity for members of the community to gain an understanding of the risks and learn simple, effective steps to improve their online security."
Also on the panel are David Vohradsky, founder and CEO of MyRISK, a company at the forefront of AI-driven cyber risk solutions, and Sermin Yavuzer, Director of Executive Education at the AI and Cyber Futures Institute, where she leads the design and delivery of high-impact programs that build capability in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies for senior corporate leaders.
Associate Professor Niamh Kinchin, who researches the risks and potential of AI in legal settings, will chair the panel discussion.
During the discussion the expert speakers will offer insights into real-world incidents and answer questions from the audience.
