Free Repair Days Aid Noosa in Cutting Landfill Waste

Michael from The Men's Shed (pictured right) has sharpened many garden tools and household knives, keeping them out of landfill.

Since the launch of Noosa Council's Free Community Repair Days, Michael (pictured, right) from the Men's Shed has sharpened a host of gardening tools and household knives for local residents, breathing new life into items otherwise destined for landfill.

"We've been able to sharpen a wide range of tools for a lot of people - everything from kitchen knives to secateurs ," he said.

With sustainability at the heart of the Repair Day initiative, Noosa locals are encouraged to spread the word and make use of the service, with two more Repair Days so far locked in.

"We'd love to keep these going for the community, if the demand is there," Council's Waste Education and Sustainability Officer, Emma Menzies, said.

Council's team of repairers, like Michael from the Men's Shed, can help mend small items of furniture, bicycles and most general household items.

"We also have textile repairers on the sewing machines to breathe new life into clothing and household linens," Ms Menzies said.

"If we can fix it, it spares local residents the cost of replacing an item, and keeps it out of landfill, where space is finite, so these events really are a practical, free way for the community to reduce waste and help the environment."

There is no cost to attend the Repair Days, but registration is essential, and the sharpening service is limited to three items per person.

Registrations are now open for a further two Repair Days, running from 10am to 2pm on 28 May and 25 June.

Register online.

The Repair Days are held at Reviva Reuse Shop at Noosa Council's Resource Recovery Centre, 561 Eumundi Noosa Road, Doonan.
