Residents who wish to do their bit for the environment have the opportunity to pick up a free tree for this year's National Tree Day.

Kempsey Shire Council will be donating over one thousand native trees to residents across the Macleay Valley for National Tree Day to encourage participation in the worthy cause.

While National Tree Day officially took place on 31 July, Council is hosting their giveaway a bit later on Friday 19 August at the Verge Street cricket nets from 9:30am to 2:00pm, or until all trees are gone.

Kempsey Shire Council Acting Coordinator Civic Services, Katy Rogan, said the best thing about this year's event is that the public giveaway can take place once again.

"Council has 1,000 native, seasonal fruit and vegetable trees to giveaway, which is the perfect opportunity for you to pick up a plant for your garden or backyard and enjoy the outdoors while you're at it," said Ms Rogan.

"It's great that we can offer these free trees to the public again and see the community face-to-face after having to stop these during the pandemic restrictions."

Founded in 1996 by Planet Ark and Oliva Newton-John, National Tree Day has become Australia largest collective tree planting and environmental education event.
