The City of Fremantle proudly celebrated the dedication, leadership and community spirit of its local sporting community at the 2026 Sport and Recreation Recognition Night, held on Friday 30 January.
The newly initiated annual event recognises volunteers, young leaders and sporting clubs who give their time, energy and leadership to support sport and recreation in Fremantle.
Fremantle-based athletes who've represented their state or country with excellence are also acknowledged on the night.
This year's award winners reflect the positive impact sport has on community connection, wellbeing and participation across the city.
The Award categories were:
- Volunteer Impact Award - celebrating volunteers whose contributions have strengthened club operations, culture, and community engagement.
- Youth Leadership Award - recognising young members who demonstrate leadership, initiative, and positive influence within their clubs.
- Walyalup Legacy Award - honouring a Fremantle sporting club that has created lasting, transformative impacts on community wellbeing.
The winners are:
- Volunteer Impact Award - Scott McKenzie

- Walyalup Legacy Award - Fremantle Phantoms AFL Masters Football Club
For more than 40 years, the Fremantle Phantoms AFL Masters Football Club has provided a welcoming and supportive space for men over 35 to stay active, make friends and feel connected. The club prides itself on being inclusive, relaxed and supportive, with no pressure around performance or attendance. Through football, shared meals, social events and family friendly traditions, the Phantoms create a strong sense of belonging that supports mental health, wellbeing and community connection. Their impact extends beyond the field, strengthening families and helping build a more connected Fremantle.
The City of Fremantle congratulates all award winners and nominees and thanks the many volunteers, players and clubs who continue to support sport and recreation across the community.
