Fresh Start: Kickstart Your Council Career In 2026

Tweed Shire Council

Tweed Shire Council is recruiting 8 new cadets, apprentices and trainees to start work in the Tweed at the beginning of 2026.

The group includes 4 Council-funded apprenticeships and 4 positions delivered through Round 3 of the NSW Government's Fresh Start program.

These paid, entry-level roles combine on-the-job experience with nationally- recognised training to create a clear pathway to long-term employment.

Successful applicants will complete a fully-funded qualification and gain practical experience in disciplines such as graphic design, horticulture, electrical instrumentation, mechanical engineering, water operations, surveying and civil engineering.

Mayor of Tweed Shire, Chris Cherry, said the initiative is about building career pathways while supporting the region's future workforce needs.

"We know that developing real-life experience in a job, especially when you're starting something new, can be challenging.

"These positions are a wonderful opportunity for those beginning their careers, changing direction or re-entering the workforce to be supported by the experienced staff at Council. For Council, it means that we can attract new, talented individuals to the area, and to contribute to the wide-ranging work that Council does," Cr Cherry said.

Council encourages applications from people of all ages, abilities and educational backgrounds.

Blaze Curtis-Green joined Council in early 2025 as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catchment and Land Management trainee. He says the opportunity has helped him explore a range of career options.

"I've always had a passion for land management and caring for my country, so I thought this would be a good opportunity," said Blaze. "It's very diverse. Once I complete this qualification, it opens up lots of different jobs and pathways."

The following roles are open to candidates from all walks of life:

Apprentice Graphic Designer

Apprentice Park and Gardens – Northern Rivers Rail Trail

Apprentice Electrician

Apprentice Mechanical Fitter

Trainee Women in Water

Cadet Survey Technician

Cadet Civil Engineer Designer (2 positions)

Tweed Shire Council was named 2021 Employer of Choice by Professionals Australia (Local Government Engineers' Association) for its strong employment practices in NSW local government.
