Florida State University, WFSU and the Early Learning Coalition are teaming up to bring an in-person workshop that offers continuing education to local educators.

The Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families and Children in the FSU College of Social Work has partnered with the local PBS station WFSU Public Media and the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend to host PBS KIDS Edcamps focusing on voluntary pre-kindergarten and early elementary education.

“Edcamps are the ‘unconference,'” said center program manager Tai Cole. “We don’t dictate what topics are talked about – participants come up with topics that matter to them and discuss in groups with WFSU only helping to organize the conversations.”

Cole will present on social-emotional learning and “Rebound and Recovery,” a new certification program to assist teachers in developing skills to better educate and support the emotional needs of their students, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14.

Since 2016, WFSU has hosted free, participant-driven professional development events for preschool and early educators, along with K-12 administrators.

“This partnership with WFSU and the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend allows us to impact our community here in Leon County directly,” said Ellen Piekalkiewicz, director of the FSU Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families and Children.

The Edcamp also provides attending educators located in the Big Bend region of Florida with two in-service hours. Certificates of completion are also available for providers outside of the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend’s service area.

At the end of the workshop, participants can win prizes, including registration costs valued at $599.
