Funding awarded for pedestrian and cyclist safety

The City of Stonnington has been awarded Victorian Government funding for local road safety projects to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Awarded through the Transport Accident Commission's Annual Local Government Grant Program, Stonnington was one of 22 councils to receive funding towards improving road safety outcomes for vulnerable road users.

Funding is offered in two categories, analysis projects and small-scale infrastructure projects, with Stonnington awarded for two projects – one from each category.

The first project, the Claremont Avenue Traffic Study and Concept Development, was awarded $30,000 for a study into issues affecting pedestrian and cyclist safety along Claremont Avenue and surrounding streets. The study will deliver recommendations and concept designs to address any identified issues, and support our 'shimmy' bicycle network by making Claremont Avenue and side streets safe cycling routes for people of all ages and confidence levels. The 'shimmy' network draws cyclists away from major roads to local streets where traffic speeds and volumes are lower making them more attractive and less risky to people on bikes.

The second project will deliver safety improvements to the Main Yarra Trail crossing at Alexandra Avenue and Williams Road. The City will match the $90,000 grant to build a raised pedestrian crossing on Alexandra Avenue, a new shared path connection from Alexandra Avenue to Williams Road plus signage, line marking and kerb outstands. This project will improve safety by reducing vehicle speeds and providing a safe crossing point with clear priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

Quotes attributable to City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Jami Klisaris

'We are pleased to receive funding that recognises the importance of these two pedestrian and cyclist safety projects.

'Our proximity to the Yarra River, vibrant shopping strips and leafy neighbourhoods make us a popular destination for people using all modes of transport, and we are committed to making our streets and shared paths safe and accessible for all.

I look forward to seeing these two projects progress and deliver safety improvements for our community and people who visit our city.
