Owners of heritage properties across the Edward River LGA now have more time to apply for funding through the 2026-27 Local Heritage Grants Program. Applications have been extended until 30 July 2026, giving eligible property owners the opportunity to secure support for projects that preserve, restore and celebrate local heritage.

Supported through a funding contribution from the NSW Government, the Local Heritage Grants Program provides practical assistance for conservation and maintenance works that help protect the unique character, history and charm of Deniliquin and the surrounding villages. The program also aims to raise awareness of heritage conservation and encourage the preservation of significant local buildings and places.

Mayor Ashley Hall said the program provides an important opportunity for the community to invest in and protect local heritage assets for future generations.

"Our historic buildings and streetscapes tell the story of who we are and where we've come from," Mayor Hall said.

"The Local Heritage Grants Program helps property owners undertake valuable conservation works that not only protect heritage features but also contribute to the overall character and appeal of our towns and villages.

"We encourage eligible property owners to consider how this funding could help bring their restoration or conservation project to life."

Funding is available for projects that support the conservation and maintenance of:

• Community buildings

• Heritage-listed properties

• Buildings located within heritage conservation areas

• Buildings identified by Council's Heritage Adviser as having heritage significance

Successful applicants are required to provide a dollar-for-dollar contribution towards approved projects.

The program has already delivered positive outcomes locally. In 2024-25, a Local Heritage Grant helped restore the heritage façade of 115 End Street, Deniliquin, including the revival of original tiles and repairs to structural elements that enhanced the building's historic character. The restoration has contributed to a vibrant new art space and brought renewed life to the local streetscape.

Mayor Hall said preserving heritage buildings helps maintain the unique identity of the region.

"When we invest in our heritage buildings, we are investing in the future of our communities," he said.

Edward River Council encourages anyone considering heritage conservation works to review the program guidelines and submit an application before the extended closing date.

Applications for the 2026-27 Local Heritage Grants Program close at 5.00pm on Thursday, 30 July 2026.
