Council has secured $1 million in funding through the NSW Government's Safer Cities: Her Way 2 program to deliver safer, more welcoming pedestrian routes connecting to the Stewart Place Bus Terminal in Nowra CBD.
In February, Councillors voted in favour of applying for the funding that will focus on improving perceptions of safety, accessibility and amenity along key walking routes, with a strong emphasis on engaging women, girls and gender diverse people in shaping the outcomes.
Mayor Patricia White said the project represents a significant step forward in making the Nowra CBD feel more inclusive and safer for everyone.
"This investment is about ensuring everyone in our community - particularly women and vulnerable groups - feel safe and comfortable moving through Nowra CBD, day and night," Cr White said.
"Importantly, this project will go some way to addressing concerns raised by the Shoalhaven Business Chamber about the need to improve safety and lighting in Schofields Lane, which is a key pedestrian link in the CBD.
"By working closely with our community, we can better understand the barriers people face and design solutions that genuinely improve safety and accessibility," she said.
Community consultation and co-design workshops will play a central role in determining the final scope of works.
Placemaking initiatives could include improved lighting and visibility, clear sightlines, enhanced wayfinding and signage, public art, and upgrades to amenity and accessibility.
Minister for Transport John Graham said this was the second round of the first-of-its-kind Safer Cities: Her Way program.
"This new funding builds on the success of the Safer Cities program, which has already engaged with around 30,000 people to shape projects across more than 80 communities across the state.
"Whether walking, riding or using public transport, everyone has the right to travel safely and feel safe in public spaces, both day and night.
"It's important we continue to invest in programs like this to help deliver local upgrades that make a big difference in building safer, vibrant, thriving communities for everyone."
Engagement activities will begin in the coming months, with key stakeholders and community representatives to participate in workshops and provide feedback to help guide the design and delivery of the project.
The projected timeframe for any changes and the installation of any additional infrastructure to be complete by the end of 2027.
