GambleAware Week - time to think of costs

NSW Government

The NSW Government is encouraging people across the State to pause and think about how gambling might be affecting them, or their family and friends as part of GambleAware Week 2022.

Minister for Hospitality and Racing Kevin Anderson said the week, which runs from 17 to 23 October, raises awareness of the potential pitfalls of gambling and helps connect people at risk with support services.

"Help through GambleAware is tailored to the needs and circumstances of an individual. There are now more ways than ever to have a bet with the rise of online gambling, sports betting and other emerging markets," Mr Anderson said.

"This means it's more important than ever for people to check in on their gambling or have a chat with someone close to them."

Mr Anderson said the theme of GambleAware Week - What's gambling costing you? - asks people to think about the costs beyond just money, whether it be impacts on health, relationships or work.

"These are the often hidden costs which can slowly creep up on gamblers before they find they're in serious trouble," Mr Anderson said.

"Most people can gamble without experiencing any harm but for a small minority it can become a huge problem impacting multiple areas of their lives.

"Our Government's GambleAware services provide information and resources to help prevent people experiencing gambling harm and provide a range of support options that are quickly and easily available for those who need them."

Mr Anderson said the NSW Government is strongly committed to preventing and reducing gambling harm, with $33 million to be spent in 2022/23 on initiatives including counselling, community awareness, advertising and research.

GambleAware Week runs from Monday 17 October to Sunday 23 October. The GambleAware phoneline 1800 858 858 is open 24 hours a day for anyone needing support. It is free and confidential.
