Georges River Council Maintains Focus On Food Safety

Georges River Council

Georges River Council has completed its food surveillance program for the year, highlighting Council's commitment to the health and safety of the community.

During the 2025-2026 financial year, 787 food businesses were inspected. In addition, 84 stalls and mobile food businesses that traded in the area were also inspected. Council also received 118 food-related services requests, with every single one being investigated.

Council's Environmental Health Officers check on things most people can't see, such as:

  • Food hygiene and safe handling of food

  • Cleanliness of premises and equipment

  • Personal hygiene of staff

  • Pest control and waste management

  • Structural condition of the premises

Education is also a key approach. Environmental Health Officers are constantly educating food businesses on new laws, safe practices and hygiene. Food businesses are more likely to stay compliant when they have more knowledge. This should also result in less food-related incidents within the community.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Our Environmental Health and Regulatory Services team works diligently to ensure the health and safety of our community.

"Council is committed to working with our local food businesses to maintain high standards so meals can be safely enjoyed by all."

Council submits an annual activity report to the NSW Food Authority under the Food Act 2003. Individual inspection results are not publicly released. However, residents can see a list of businesses that authorities have fined or prosecuted.
