Innovative and sustainable initiatives to reduce emissions and protect the environment in the Georges River area are now underpinned by a major commitment in an United Nations Program.
In time for the Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Georges River Council joins the UN's Cities Race to Zero Program, propelling us onto the global stage to send a resounding signal that local governments are united in meeting the goal of the Paris Agreement.
As a part of this Program, Council is now committed to a net zero community emission by 2050, which will be built on the success of Council's existing targets of sourcing 100% renewable energy for its operations and being a net zero organisation by 2025.
Council's General Manager Gail Connolly said it would take enormous unity to tackle global warming; this is the first step for our cities come together and build a more sustainable future for our children.
"As the level of government that is the closest to the community, we feel a sense of responsibility to lead a vision, introduce policies, and encourage the entire local community to do the same.
"By bringing a clear focus on immediate action, Georges River Council will position itself among global leaders in climate action and sustainability.
"Georges River 2050 – our long-term vision is the cornerstone for everything Council plans for its future, setting out ambitious targets for energy efficiency, waste reduction, and waterway and wildlife protection."
Since our City Strategy and Innovation team put the 2050 vision into action, Council has taken steps to drive greenhouse emissions down, these include:

Partnering with Ausgrid to convert eligible street lighting to energy efficient LEDs

Installing solar panels on Council sites producing approximately 271,779kWh annually, equal to 51 Georges River family homes annual consumption. Reducing emissions more than 1348.7 tonnes since the first installation occurred on Council's building.

Trialling the use of two electric vehicles and preparing a plan to transition our fleet from petrol/diesel to hybrid and electric vehicles with reduced emissions

Procured renewable energy from the Moree Solar Farm, equal to 20% of Council's operational consumption.

Implemented the Energy and Water Management Plan to increase energy efficiency in Council's largest consuming sites, including LED lighting and fine-tuning building management systems to optimise heating, ventilation and cooling.
The Cities Race to Zero Program is a partnership effort to support cities around the world in accessing the Race to Zero with the best available expertise and tools.
