Geraldton Health Boosts Energy with New Module

  • New energy plant modules installed as part of Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment
  • WA-made energy modules will provide heating, cooling and electricity for the health campus
  • Redevelopment to deliver modern, fit-for-purpose health infrastructure for the Mid West

The redevelopment of Geraldton Health Campus has reached a new milestone with four central energy plant modules now installed on site.

Built in Malaga, the modules will supply heating, cooling and electricity across the health campus through a centralised system.

The innovative modular design delivers a smarter, cleaner approach to construction by building the units off-site in a controlled environment to minimise disruption and speed up installation.

The energy plant installation follows the completion of structural works for the new building, with all building faade components also installed.

The new building is connected to the existing hospital at both ground and first floor levels, which will allow staff and patients to move easily between new and existing facilities.

Construction is now progressing on masonry, structural steel, ceilings and servicesfor the new Acute Mental Health Unit.

Finalroof slabs have been poured for the expanded Emergency Department, allowingfor glazing, cladding and work on the external and internal wallsto begin.

The Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment continues to create jobs for locals with more than $10 million in contracts awarded to Mid West businesses.

Once complete, the upgraded Geraldton Health Campus will feature an expanded emergency department, a new intensive care unit and high dependency unit, as well as an integrated mental health service comprising an adult mental health inpatient unit and a mental health short stay unit.

The Cook Labor Government is also progressing the delivery of a new cancer treatment centre at Geraldton Health Campus, with $1 million in planning funding allocated in the 2025-26 State Budget.

The $30 million cancer treatment facility includes a $9 million Commonwealth Government commitment through the Community Health and Hospitals Program, on top of a $21 million election commitment from the Cook Labor Government.

As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:

"The arrival of WA-made energy modules is a great example of how we're using smart engineering to deliver complex health infrastructure more efficiently.

"We're creating a facility that's built for the future and this milestone brings us closer to delivering an upgraded health campus that supports better access to healthcare for people in the Mid West.

"This is part of our ambitious $3.2 billion health infrastructure program, which includes a number of major hospital upgrades in regional Western Australia."

As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

"The Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment is a significant investment in healthcare for the Mid West community.

"When complete, even more people will be able to access the care they need without having to travel to the city.

"This is particularly important for patients seeking care for their mental health, with the new integrated mental health service allowing more patients to be closer to their support networks while they receive treatment."

Comments attributed to Mid West Minister Jackie Jarvis:

"Ensuring every Western Australian can access the healthcare they need, no matter where they live, is a priority for our government.

"That is why we are future-proofing Geraldton Health Campus, so Mid West locals can access the medical services they need, closer to home - whether that be emergency treatment, intensive care or mental health support.

"It is great to see innovative WA-made infrastructure being used to deliver this significant project, which is investing millions of dollars back into Mid West businesses and creating quality jobs for locals."

Comments attributed to MLC Sandra Carr:

"This redevelopment represents the single-biggest investment in Geraldton Health Campus and builds on our government's strong record of boosting health services across Geraldton and broader Mid West region.

"Delivering a modern, fit-for-purpose hospital is an investment in the region's future by supporting local jobs and providing the people of the Mid West the quality healthcare they need here in our region."
