Global Campaign Shines Light on Huntington's Disease

Wagga Wagga's Coat of Arms on the façade of the Civic Centre will be lit up blue and purple this month to bring awareness to Huntington's Disease.

Light It Up 4 HD is a global campaign for Huntington's Disease (HD) and Juvenile HD during Huntington's Disease Awareness Month in May.

The Wagga Wagga City Council building joins landmarks around the world being illuminated in blue and purple in recognition of HD which is an inherited degenerative neurological condition affecting the brain and central nervous system.

Huntington's Disease progressively impairs mental and physical abilities, eventually leading to the loss of critical functions such as walking, talking, eating, and reasoning.

Local HD campaigner Sarah Summerfield is delighted to see Wagga Wagga's involvement in Light It Up 4 HD.

"This is a beautiful campaign to spread awareness about this debilitating disease, affecting quite a significant number of people throughout the Riverina," Ms Summerfield said.

"Having a display like this locally gives our community the opportunity to feel supported."

Manager Community Services Madeleine Scully said "the temporary lighting displays are a practical way for Council to support community organisations to raise the profile of their campaigns."

Light It Up 4 HD provides an opportunity for the HD community to connect and learn from each other, as well as educating others who are not directly impacted by the disease.

Huntington's Australia (HA) is the peak national body dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by HD across Australia.
