The City has strengthened its relationship with Japan's Kanagawa Prefecture, signing a new agreement that will facilitate knowledge-sharing and help establish the region's first professional lifeguard service.

Acting Mayor Mark Hammel said the City of Gold Coast Lifeguard Service and the Kanagawa Lifesaving Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a recent visit to Japan.

"The City has the largest lifeguard service in Australia and is globally recognised for its high standards in beach safety, making the Gold Coast an ideal partner," Acting Mayor Hammel said.

The MoU builds on a Friendship Agreement that has connected the two regions since 1990.

"Our relationship with Kanagawa is founded on a shared passion for beach culture and coastal lifestyles," Acting Mayor Hammel said.

"This agreement takes that relationship to the next level, creating new opportunities to share expertise and help reduce drownings and improve beach safety."

President of the Kanagawa Lifesaving Association, Yuki Shirai, said the new agreement further strengthens the long-standing relationship.

"Our ultimate goal is achieving zero water-related accidents in Kanagawa," Mr Shirai said.

Three City lifeguards visited Japan from 5 to 11 July as part of the biennial Lifeguard Exchange Program, which provides participants with the opportunity to experience different patrolling systems and coastal conditions.

In alternate years, the City hosts lifeguards from Kanagawa Prefecture to participate in a specialised training program.

"Our lifeguards are highly skilled professionals who put themselves on the frontline every day to keep residents and visitors safe," Acting Mayor Hammel said.

The City's Lifeguard Service operates 365 days a year, with permanent and seasonal lifeguards patrolling more than 50 kilometres of coastline.

Lifeguards complete annual fitness assessments, including an 800-metre swim, 1,600-metre run and 800-metre board paddle, which must be completed in less than 26 minutes.
