Federation Council has formally accepted a $10,000 grant from the NSW State Government. The grant is dedicated to the initial design and costing of a proposed extension to the Urana Medical Centre.

This funding was accessed under the Commonwealth Government's COAG Section 19(2) Exemptions Initiative, also known as 'Coag 19 funding'.

This program helps rural and remote public health services, like the Urana Medical Centre, deliver primary care. The grant will fund the initial design, allowing Council to pursue funding options for the build.

The Council-owned Urana Medical Centre has long been considered to require an extension. The current facility is undersized, with an extremely small waiting room. The need for expansion has become particularly critical with the introduction of a second doctor and a practice nurse, alongside a high volume of patients.

The proposed extension aims to address this by including an additional consulting room and a larger staff room. Council's acceptance of the $10,000 grant will fund the design phase of the project, with no net financial impact to the Council's budget. The design will allow the Council to pursue further funding for the construction phase.

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook expressed her enthusiasm for the project and the community benefit it will deliver.

"Securing this grant is a crucial first step in a project that has been a priority for our community and the Local Health Advisory Committee for some time," Mayor Cook said.

"The Urana Medical Centre is a vital facility, and this extension will ensure it can continue to provide essential primary care services as our community grows."

Mayor Cook also highlighted the importance of a modern, suitable facility for health professionals.

"We must minimise the risk of losing doctors and associated health professionals by ensuring they have a suitable and well-equipped working environment," she said.

"This design funding is an investment in both our local health services and in the retention of our valued medical staff."

Following the completion of the design phase, a further report will be presented to Council to consider and pursue funding options for the construction of the extension.
