Great outcome for Surrey Hills community

The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has responded to the requests of Council and the community with the new Union Road bridge and open space. This forms part of the new Union Station and surrounding precinct currently being constructed.

To help guide the LXRP's design of this new open space, we consulted with our community in 2021 to find out what was important. Feedback helped shape our Urban Design Advice document which was used to advocate to the LXRP.

We are pleased to see that the final design for the open space and landscaping includes what our community asked for.

Key features include:

  • accessible and well-designed areas for the whole community to meet and socialise
  • trees and green areas
  • a space to host events like the Surrey Hills music festival
  • a public toilet

Boroondara's Maling Ward Councillor, Jane Addis, looks forward to seeing this wonderful new open space being enjoyed by all the community.

"This new green open space will give us a place to sit and enjoy the Union Road heritage listed streetscape. It will complement the nearby heritage Surrey Gardens," Cr Addis said.

"Council is delighted to be supporting the widened Union Road bridge and public open space, and appreciates the opportunity to work with the community to achieve this people focussed outcome."

"I look forward to seeing the Emily Floyd King Parrot sculptures and I hope everyone appreciate them as much as I do."

The LXRP will continue to build the new open spaces throughout 2023, after they complete their major construction blitz in late-May.
