Greens: Labor Backs Gas Firms, Ignores Victorians' Future

Australian Greens

The Greens have slammed Labor's decision to approve the largest new gas project in over a decade, saying they chose gas corporations over everyday Victorians and the environment.

It comes as Jacinta Allan's Labor Government signed off on a major gas project in the offshore Otway Basin - the second and largest major gas project Labor's approved this term.

The Greens say in the middle of a climate crisis, all the science tells us to stop burning fossil fuels meanwhile Labor is approving new projects that will lock Victorians into a future of fossil fuels and higher energy bills

Experts and economists have made it clear that opening new fossil fuel projects delays the transition and locks pollution into the grid for decades.

Around 80% of Australia's gas is exported as liquefied natural gas (LNG), the gas industry pays ZERO royalties on more than half the gas exported.

The Greens say there is no other logical explanation for Labor to approve new gas projects in a climate crisis apart from them capitulating to their corporate gas donors and that there has never been a more important time to get corporate donations out of politics.

As stated by Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell.

"Unless Labor are climate deniers now, the only explanation for this project is that they have chosen to support their mega gas corporation mates over the future of everyday people and our environment."

"Jacinta Allan's Labor government isn't making decisions based on what is right for everyday people because they have locked themselves into dodgy deals with gas corporations who fund their election campaigns."

"The Greens are the only party who have the guts to fundamentally change the system, get corporate power out of politics and make billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share, to put that money back into the public good, so that everyone can afford a home and the things we need to live a decent life."

As stated by Member for Western Victoria, Sarah Mansfield.

"Opening a new gas project in the middle of a climate crisis is absurd. Our community has just experienced unprecedented fires and floods. The only ones that want this to go ahead are Labor's mates, the gas Corporations."
