The Victorian Greens have renewed their calls for a parliamentary inquiry into road safety, following the recent death of a cyclist near Warrnambool.
The 57-year-old man collided with a car near the intersection of Southern Cross Road and Tower Hill Road in Illowa on Friday.
This follows reports of another cyclist death earlier this month, which saw a cyclist struck by a truck at the intersection of the Footscray Road trail and Dock Link Road in West Melbourne.
The Greens say that to prevent future cyclist injuries, collisions, and deaths on Victorian roads, the state must improve active transport infrastructure.
They say that an inquiry would help identify the best ways to do so.
As stated by Victorian Greens transport spokesperson, Katherine Copsey MLC:
"We know roads are dangerous places for cyclists, but that shouldn't be the case.
"Active transport users should be able to use our roads without fear of injury, or worse.
"An inquiry into road safety would help identify the main issues and recommend a path forward so that all Victorians can use our roads safely."
As stated by Victorian Greens rural and regional spokesperson, Sarah Mansfield MLC:
"Cyclists in rural and regional areas are overrepresented in cycling deaths and serious injuries.
"Cyclists in the regions shouldn't have to risk their lives just trying to get to work, school or home.
"This man's death in Illowa is a tragedy. To stop further injuries and deaths the government must invest in active transport infrastructure to keep cyclists and pedestrians safe."
